Why do they do it? Why do tourists insist on eating sub-standard ‘tapas’ on Las Ramblas? Especially when the real thing is available a few steps away on Carrer Unió.
Bar Cañete aims to bring a little Andalucian duende to the centre of the Ciudad Condal. It certainly looks more stately Sevillian than Barcelonean, with a pretty ‘patio Andaluz’ style décor, waiters in prim white jackets and lots of colourful details.
Like many restaurants in Barcelona serving quality tapas – the prices tend to be high- ish – to the point where the bill may edge up to the price of a full meal. You can keep it down by ordering ‘fillers’ such as a bacadillo de calamares (Cañete is one of the few places in the city to serve this amazing, gut filling treat) but you would be missing out stellar dishes such as organic chicken croquettes, succulent suckling pig and that country Catalan classic meat balls with cuttle fish. Leave room for dessert (if you can) especially the sacher torte and the farmhouse cheese board, a rare thing anywhere in Spain.
