It is sometimes difficult to find unique ways to remember your travels and incorporate those into your home when thinking of décor. When thinking of how to bring your trips in and make them personalized, many of our minds just go to a photo book or maybe a tourist shirt from that location. While a photo book or T-shirt are great, it will usually just sit on a desk or in a drawer never to be seen again. While it might be tempting to grab every tourist gimmick in site, these items usually do not work well in our everyday home life. If done correctly, there are many better ways to bring your travels into your home in more personalized ways.
My favorite way of doing this is photo canvases. I have done a lot of traveling and decided rather than taking EVERY photo I’ve ever snapped and putting it on my wall, I took my favorite photo from each city I’ve been to and used that as the highlighted memory. I then used a vendor (very easy to find online, search photo canvas print) and had my photo sized and printed on a canvas. I now have a photo from each of my favorite places scattered collage style across my wall. This is great because it makes the memory personal. It is your own photo from your trip on your wall. Every time I look at my wall it takes me back to all those places physically standing there and snapping the photo.
Another unique way to document your travel through your home is non-touristy memorabilia. Grab that handmade plate from Turkey or the antique vase you bargained for in Paris. Going past the usual ‘I love NY’ keychain or London postcard, you can bring home things that might not necessarily say ‘I went to Thailand’ but that have a story behind them of your unique trip. My favorite piece I have ever brought home from traveling was a piece of street art I bargained for in Greece that I know no one else will have. Every time I look at it, I am reminded of my trip and all the amazing things I saw.
My final suggestion for bringing your travel into décor is starting a collection. Decide on one item, be it frames or maybe pillows (depending on your amount of travel!) and always go on a hunt for that whenever you are in a new place. Although they all may be the same item, it’s guaranteed you will find a unique selection in each place you visit. Pick something you could see being timeless in your home throughout the years and watch your collection grow. This also makes traveling fun because you can scope out where to find your item in that particular city and make it a fun ‘hunt’ on your trip.
Documenting your travel can sometimes be hard without being overly cheesy and touristy. Hope you find these tips helpful in bringing your trips into your home!
