So, you’ve decided its time to brush that dust off the old keyboard and finally start working on your web presence. You probably heard about keywords and how they can help you on your quest to generate more traffic. But you’re not sure what they are or where to start. Not to worry, we are here to help!
First of all, what are keywords?
Keywords are simply words and phrases that internet users type into search engines to find what they are looking for.
You must determine the words or phrases you want to rank or show up for in search engines, and use those keywords when adding new content to your website.
How many keywords should you target?
We recommend selecting less than 5 keywords. You can select more than 5 keywords, however, unless you’re dedicating a great deal of time, it is very difficult to rank for over 5 keywords. Keep in mind, one keyword can contain multiple words, and although most people do shorter searches, it is much easier to rank for longer searches, also known as long-tail searches.
Here are some sample real estate related keywords:
“real estate agent”
“low commission real estate agents”
“Liberty Village condominiums”
“Etobicoke pre-construction projects”
“best realtor GTA”
“what is the best condo investment area” (long-tail search example)
“low commission real estate agents”
“Liberty Village condominiums”
“Etobicoke pre-construction projects”
“best realtor GTA”
“what is the best condo investment area” (long-tail search example)
Be mindful of the fact that, it is much harder to rank for a general keyword like “Toronto Condos” as opposed a more specific keyword like “High Park Condominiums”, so choose wisely!
Here are two awesome tools which will help you identify which keywords you should be targeting: AdWords & WordTracker
You know which keywords to target, but now what?
You’ve narrowed down your top keywords, you’re ready to get to work, but you’re unsure where to start? No problemo!
First and foremost, log in to your website and change the Browser title and Meta Description of your home page. Click here if you want to learn more about those terms. Make sure that you use your most important keywords in the Browser Title and Meta Tags.
You should regularly update your blog with valuable content relating to the keywords you’ve selected. So, if you’re targeting a specific neighbourhood you want to rank for, you now have to serve as a reporter for that area. Is there a new construction project coming out? Perhaps there is a new mall being built. Is there an awesome deal in the neighbourhood you want to inform people about? Blog about it!
Here is an example of the steps you would take:
If your selected keyword is “Etobicoke pre-construction projects”
Blog Title: Announcing a brand new Etobicoke Pre-Construction Project
Blog Body: You should try to use “Etobicoke pre-construction project” at least once in the body.
Page Name: You should match the Blog Title.
Clear URL: www.yourdomainname.com/announcing-a-brand-new-etobicoke-pre-construction-project
Browser Title: You should match the Blog Title or Keyword used.
Meta Description: You should describe what the post/page is about in less than 160 characters.
Meta Keywords: Becoming less and less important to search engines, so if you do decide to use them, try to keep them to a minimum and separate by a comma, not a space.
A great web presence doesn’t happen over night, but following these steps will help you drive new traffic, build your brand, and keep you fresh on the minds of leads and clients.
