1. Chemical Treatments
If you love to perm or get your hair chemically straightened, there is definite damage being done. When you are applying chemicals to the hair to alter it, you’re literally breaking down the inner bonds of your hair. If you’re really set on getting your hair straightened or permed, have your stylist conduct a “strand test” to see how your hair reacts to the chemical. Your hair may be drier, so make appointments for monthly deep conditioning treatments and try to lay off use of hot tools.
2. Ponytails
Believe it or not, the beloved pony can cause breakage and damage to your hair. This isn’t to say you should never wear a pony; just be mindful of how long your hair is in a ponytail, how tight your hair is pulled back and try to limit wearing the style to once or twice a week.
3. Hot Tools
Alright, it isn’t exactly a newsflash that your blow dryer, curling iron and flat irons are big culprits in causing damage to your hair. And yet, everyone still uses them almost daily! Be mindful of how often you use these tools and to minimize damage, spritz hair with a heat protectant spray. Also, try to use the lowest heat setting possible for your flat iron and your curling iron.
4. Swimming Pools
Summer is just around the corner and while it’s a great time to hit the pool, be aware of the chlorine damage it can cause to your beloved locks! Chlorine can turn blonde hair green and strip hair of its natural oils, leaving it dry, brittle and damaged. If you’re an avid swimmer, be sure to rinse your hair before and immediately after you get out of the pool to rid your hair of the chlorine. You should consider adding a weekly hair mask or deep conditioning treatment to your beauty routine.
5. Hair Dye
Bleach is bad for hair. There’s no real way around it. The process involves stripping your hair of its color, which can cause plenty of damage if not done correctly. Instead of bleaching, try a semi-permanent dye which isn’t as aggressive on tender tresses. You can also try incorporating bleached clip-in hair extensions for a highlighted look without having to dye your actual hair.
6. Over Shampooing
Yes, you can actually wash your hair too much! Unfortunately, washing your hair every day can cause your hair to dry out. Try washing your hair every other day or every few days, if possible. For really oily hair, some dry shampoo will help those in-between hair wash days.
