Artists Andrew Hem and Mel Kadel both recently developed solo exhibitions that will be showing throughout March at Merry Karnowsky Gallery in Los Angeles, California. Andrew Hem's work, Dream but Don't Sleep, is a collection of new pieces that feature bold colors and thick strokes of paint. Drawing upon reality, Hem created slightly distorted compositions with hard, geometric edges that explore figures set within natural surroundings.
In contrast, Mel Kadel's work, Tied Up, is a collection of ink drawings on hand-stained paper that present softer forms and a more neutral color palette. The series is inspired by feelings of anxiety: "The reality is, it's gripping and debilitating and can be a complete loss of control," explains Kadel," This group of drawings is made to show that it’s not a weakness at all, but a powerful cue from ourselves to take things in a different direction."
The two incredible solo exhibitions open March 8, 2014 and will run through March 29, 2014.
