Dealing with an Emergency Plumbing Problem

It’s the scenario we all hope never happens, a plumbing problem has struck and is about to cause devastation to your home, your belongings, and everything else of value that may be close enough to the source for damage.  Of course, there are ways to handle this kind of thing appropriately, and knowing exactly what to do will pay off – as the longer it takes you to stop the problem the more likely you are to see major damage as a result.
Shut off the water to your home
If you have a valid plumbing emergency, as in a pipe has ruptured, a major leak has given way and is about to flood your property, or in general you have water spewing in all directions from a fixture, then the first step you should take is to seek out the water shut off valve in your home and stop the water from flowing at the source.  This is a very temporary measure to prevent water from causing havoc and damaging everything in sight, including your walls and furniture.  If you aren’t sure where the shut off valve is, then I suggest familiarizing yourself with its location immediately.  Knowing where it is when the emergency strikes is really important if you expect to minimize any damage that may occur.
Next, call a plumber
Most plumbers that operate today have emergency services available at all times.  Many companies even provide emergency plumbing repairs that are free of additional charges, so you won’t have to worry about paying way more for service at nighttime or over the weekends, or at least that’s how the plumbers in Raleigh, NC do things.  Let’s face it, even plumbers hate emergencies and the last thing they need with such a headache is double the repair bill just because it’s happened at a bad time.  Calling a plumber immediately is what you need to do get things fixed fast.
If you don’t know of a good plumber in your area, then chances are you can leverage Google pretty quickly to find what you need.  Hopefully your computer hasn’t been drenched by water already, and if it hasn’t, do a quick search for a plumber in your area and pick one that has either positive reviews, or at the least no negative reviews.  Give them a call and they should be on their way within an hour.  Of course, I’m one to always rely on Mr. Rooter, and if you like emergency services without additional charges then I suggest you rely on them as well.
