The long-awaited Philadelphia Airport construction project has finally come into view. With it, one airport terminal, considered an auxiliary building, will become a main hub in the airport’s infrastructure. Terminal F, a long-time underutilized space for space for US Airways Express flights, will feature more flights, a food court, and modern passenger amenities.
The long-anticipated $117 million expansion project started in spring 2011 with the goal to add 68,000 square feet to the space, roughly a 33% increase from the previous airport size. Barring any setbacks before that time, the Terminal F project has been

Terminal F opened initially to host US Airways Express flights in 2001. Slowly but surely, the terminal became more utilized, as 16.7% of airport passengers frequent Terminal F today. The opportunity to expand the space and open more businesses became to alluring to pass up in 2011.
The new construction in Philadelphia plans to transform Terminal F into a “central hub” for concentrated airline operations and concession options. On a macro level, the new Terminal F will introduce a renovated security checkpoint with double the security lanes and a baggage claim area with multiple carousels. In addition, a new connector will be built to transport passengers from Terminal F to Terminal E, making all terminals easily accessible to one another.
300 Jobs Will Be Created As a Result of New Construction in Philadelphia Airport
With 16 new businesses set to open, Philadelphia Airport officials have said that 300 new jobs will be created when the construction is finished. Most positions will be in the restaurant and retail industries as a part of the terminal’s emerging concession program. Bakers, cooks, hostesses, supervisors and other positions will be hired in preparation for the expanded terminal’s opening. At the moment, several new venues have already opened in the fledgling concession area, including concessions Au Bon Pain and Cibo Express Gourmet Market. Both Hudson News and Re:Vive Bar has already opened their doors as retail options.
The new construction in Philadelphia promises to provide travelers with amenities and concessions to better the Terminal F experience. The Philadelphia Airport is certainly receiving an upgrade.
