One Quick Check Can Protect Your Twitter Account From Dangerous Apps

Got Twitter Spam Being
Posted As You?

Ack! Help! There are tweets full of spam in my twitter stream that I didn’t post!
This is, unfortunately, one of the more common requests for help that I get with twitter.
While you definitely want to change your password and enable https in the settings, these types of infections almost always stem from formerly-safe apps that you had approved having “gone rogue“.
What happens is that an app we approve to connect to twitter is safe today, but 2 years down the line it gets bought by a team of malware makers and those people suddenly have access to push data to your twitter stream! Yikes!
(Alternatively, sometimes old apps just go corrupt and start spitting out very broken code. They throw this code at the Twitter API and twitter then suddenly freaks out because it thinks someone is attacking you.)
Fortunately, it’s SUPER SIMPLE to see a list of all the apps you have ever given permission to connect to twitter – and to revoke those permissions.

Find Which Applications Have Permissions To Connect Or Post To Twitter As You

Odds are, the first time you visit this page, you’re going to be SHOCKED at how many apps still have access to your account!
Simply scroll down the page and revoke access to any app that you do not use REGULARLY.
You can always re-connect an app later. This is not a block or ban so don’t be afraid of removing too many things.
This is almost always enough to get rid of this type of infection as long as you are aggressive enough in removing permissions that you manage to weed out the culprit.
It’s also really really good hygiene for PREVENTING this type of problem!
