What You Will Need:
Basically what you just need is a photo editor like Photoshop, GIMP or some other program. It doesn’t have to be that advanced as you just need basic tools for adding text, merging and cropping images. Almost all the popular photo editing programs can do those things, and even if you are not an expert, these instructions will show just how easy it is.
1. Add Text Easily:
The simplest and often most effective way of creating a meme is to add text to an image, as even a simple image will elicit laughter with the right text. To add text, you just open your photo editing program and click the text or type tool from the palette. Now press down the text tool and options will appear such as typing horizontal text, vertical text, making the letters a selection and so on. Next you have to choose the font, the size and color.
Place the cursor where you want to type, and begin typing. If you make a mistake you can always undo it. You can choose any type of font style you want, but it is best to choose a simple font so it easy to read. If the overall color of the image is dark, the text should be light and vice versa.
2. Advanced Text Tricks:
While basic text is all right for most memes, some require more advanced options, and this means using fancier fonts or adding perspective or make them in 3D. These options are available in photo editing programs as well and usually included in the text tool option.
Or if you want to try something fancy, you can type text in a 3D program and import it into your photo editing program and just paste it into the image. Using this approach you can give your meme a different look.
While text is certainly key, you need not overdo it, that is fill the meme with words. An effective photo meme makes use of both text and image to convey its message. Often you just need to place a short text message at the top and one at the bottom and that will be enough.
Don’t make the text too large as it might overpower the rest of the image. At the same time you should not be afraid to experiment and find what text color, size and style works best for the photo meme you have in mind.
3. Cutting Objects and People:
If you have an idea for a meme that requires objects from different images, you can just cut them. This is not as hard as it seems. If the object you want has a solid background color, click the “magic wand” tool to select the solid color background, and choose inverse selection. The object will end up being selected. Now you can cut it out.
If the background is complex, choose the paint mask tool and start “painting” the object you want to cut. Go over the object entirely with the mask tool until it has been selected. When the selection is complete, cut it. Now you just need to paste the object into the photo meme.
There are also photo editing programs that allow you to select parts of an image by color. Simply click the appropriate tool and click the image. Depending on the color tolerance level of the tool, certain colors will be selected. Increase the color tolerance level until the entire image has been selected.
This might require some practice but you will get used to it quickly. It is actually a lot easier than it sounds and most of the time you will be dealing with simple images anyway. The point is there are a lot of methods available that you can use.
4. Remove Objects with Ease:
In some photo memes you will want to remove people and objects, and this is also very easy. The truth is the process of removing objects is the same as cutting them. If you are using Photoshop, select the magic wand tool and left click the object you want to remove. Press the shift key down to add to the selection if you want to remove more objects from the image. Keep doing this until the entire object you want removed is selected. Now select cut and create a new blank file. Paste the object you cut there or just delete if you don’t want to use it anymore.
Another way is to use the Quick Selection tool. Choose the tool from the toolbox and click the object. Click the rest of the area that you want to add to the selection. If you accidentally selected something you don’t want, press the alt key and left click that part.
5. Put One Image on Another:
Start by looking for two images you want to work with, and open them both. Set them side by side. If you want to put image 1 into image 2, select image 1, and press ctrl+C. If you want to copy only parts of the image then use any of the methods that were outlined here. When you selected the image, paste it onto image 2. The next step is to click the add layer mask icon to put a layer mask on. At the same time, make sure to set the background color to white.
Now you can add any number of special filters or effects to the second image. However you need to make sure that you don’t overdo it since adding too many special effects takes away the continuity and beauty of the image. In other words the meme will no longer appear natural, and looks awkward. Don’t go overboard and your meme will come out just fine.
As you can see it really isn’t that difficult to create great looking photo memes. All the tools are there, but you do need to be creative. You can have all the tools in the world but if you’re not creative it will all be for naught. So to produce those killer memes, you need to be original too.
