Vivienne Westwood, undoubtedly one of the UK’s most talented and celebrated designers, has been offering iconic collections since her debut in 1981. The new autumn winter collection has just touched down in Cruise and I cast a discerning eye over what is offered.
The clothes themselves have the indelible Westwood stamp, from draped tailored dresses, orb adorned knits and asymmetric lines, the fashion house has once again produced an interesting line of wearable art.
The first item drawn to my attention is the Red Label waffle knit black & camel coat. Firstly because the colours and waffle pattern initially remind me of a beehive’s stashed honey comb, and secondly because of the quirky silhouette created by a draped hood, asymmetrical fastening and loose fit. This is certainly a statement piece for winter and would look great whilst keeping you cosy during colder days.
A coat that isn’t working for me however is the curved sepia print coat. Whilst I usually love the use of differing textures and prints, this coat is simply too busy for me and the cut, whilst suitable for smaller frames, looks like it would massively accentuate the hips and derriere of anyone over a size 10.
Men have a great choice in the herringbone double breasted black peacoat. It’s a luxurious, well-made timeless piece that will echo style in the coming years, however, in comparison, the brash graphic T-shirts are a little too noisy and, dare I say it, tacky for my tastes.
Next on my list is the 3/4 Shaman Glittery Black Dress. Constructed from an eye-catching black fabric and blue glitter print, this dress screams alternative Christmas party frock. The three quarter sleeves, asymmetric dropped shoulder and draping ensure an effortless style in true Westwood fashion, whilst the barbwire print keeps it rooted in the punk heritage so famed by the brand. Throw on some chucky lace-up ankle boots and statement silver rings for an on-trend aesthetic.
Next up, we all love a good knit and my colour du jour this season is oxblood, making the classic bordeaux knitted cardigan top of my wish list.
It’s the little details on this cardigan that make it the perfect knit – a contrasting top button, deep ribbed cuffs and embroidered chest orb make it a great winter piece. The newest collection also boast a stunning coordinating bag in my favourite colour and high shine leather – if I’m not careful, I’ll be head to toe burgundy.
I couldn’t write this without taking a look at shoes. I’m a fan of anything clumpy so the new patient black Clomper – said to be a personal favourite of dame Vivienne’s - are a fresh take on a classic style, and essentially shoe porn in my eyes. Pair them with the unique Yasmine camo bag or winter tartan number and you’ll be the envy of every accessory lover out there.
