The 80/20 Rule of Social Media Marketing

The mysterious key to step up your game is hidden in the 80/20 rule…

Someone once defined a breakthrough as
‘the sudden cessation of stupidity.’
Ladies and Gentlemen, I had a breakthrough on Saturday.

Do you find yourself spending hours upon hours on social media?
Do you look at your stats at the end of the week and wonder how you’ve gotten so little traffic?
I invite you to pay attention to what I am about to share with you because this is not another one of those posts about 50 ways to do this or 3 unknown secrets of “blah blah blah”.
This, in fact, might be the most important blogpost you’ve read in a long time.
That “breakthrough” or  ”sudden cessation of stupidity” came from a book that was suggested to me.
It changed my entire perspective on my business, my blog, my social media campaign and even allowed me to free up instantly 2 hours of my day.
By the way, my name is Renaud Gagne and together we are going to be visiting the

The 80/20 rule of Social Media Marketing

You may have heard of the 80/20 rule or perhaps even read about it.
But what you may not realize is that you haven’t been aligning yourself with it and this is why paying attention right now is critical.
If you don’t know the 80/20 rule here it is:
Roughly 80% of  effects come from 20% of the causes.
Pareto’s law (the 80/20 rule) can be applied to anything that can be counted in the universe:
  • 20% of your wardrobe is used 80% of the time.
  • 20% of the beer drinkers drink 80% of the beer
  • 80% of the population of the earth is concentrated in less than 20% of the countries.
  • 20% of your clients will represent 80% of your income.
  • 80% of the snow sit on 20% of the branches
And the list goes on and on because it’s a basic law of the universe. Nothing is distributed evenly.
I remember the first time I heard of this law, my mentor at that time applied it and in only a few months quadrupled his income. All he did was look at the list of his clients and figured out which ones were paying the most and required the least amount of effort.
He then decided to focus on those vital few, and then lo and behold, his business catapulted to a new level.
You see, there are a lot of people who think that all you’ve got to do is to Take Massive Action.
But more action doesn’t necessarily mean more results. It can actually be the fastest way to burn-out.

The 80/20 rule applied to your blog and social media marketing…

Not only does your traffic come from just a few websites, but only 20% of the time you spend on social media creates 80% of your results.
If you have found yourself guilty of spending hours upon hours on social media, not knowing what key things bring you the most results, it’s time for you to stop.
Take a serious look at what you are doing because spending more time is NOT the solution.
Actually,  you can have much more success by working less. Isn’t that an elegant idea?

80/20 Rule applied to Unique Social Media Capability

What is your unique capability?

For example, let’s say that you are a rockstar on videos or live hangouts. You’re good at it, you like doing it and you can inspire people to take action through the power of spoken word.
But if most of your time is spent on doing SEO or syndicating your content on 20 social media platform or whatever, well then you are spending 80% of your time on things that are NOT your unique capability.
I’ve seen a man, build a 2 million dollars a year vlog with simply posting on facebook.
(1 video a day/5 days a week)
No SEO, No Syndication, 30 minutes of his time per day.
Why?
Because he focus on the things that he is good at and enjoy doing.
80% of his time is spent on his unique capability. Then when he has to do technical stuff, he pays someone else to do it. (It’s cheaper than you think).
If you want to make a $100 an hour or $500 an hour at work, you must stop doing $10 an hour activities as soon as possible.
So rather than thinking about what is the next platform you want to be present on, adding another spinning plate to your juggling act,
look at what platform you enjoy most, and what brings the most traffic for the least amount of effort.
Find out what are the few things that you do that actually create the bulk of your results.
Eliminate everything that ain’t producing results. (unless you really enjoy wasting your time in front of the computer).
After you’ve read this post entirely, you will look at your analytics and the insights will be obvious.
Paradoxically, once you do this, another 80/20 will appear and then you start on your journey
