February is Heart Month and it’s a perfect month to take a closer look at all affairs of the heart, be them emotional or physical. Let’s talk about the physical heart for a moment. Because, let’s face it, without your heart being healthy and strong, there is just not much else that’s going to happen in the other areas of your life, right? That where The Heart Truth® comes in. It’s a program with a goal to raise awareness about heart disease and its risk factors among women. To get people talking about taking action to reduce the risks of heart disease, they put on this engaging 28 day challenge, with each new day featuring a new idea to get your heart to a healthier place. As mentioned last week, The Succulent Wife is ambassador of the day (Day 14) for the #MYHEART28 challenge: “Protect your sweetheart’s heart: Plan a heart healthy date“. So, with that in mind, we’re here to bring you invigorating ideas for healthy date nights. No, dinner and movie dates are not going to make the list, because you already know how to do that. Instead, you need new ideas and reminders of old favorites for dates that have a healthy, active spin to them. Because, you want to grow old AND healthy with your loved one, right? It’s February and we’re still in the thick of winter. How about: 1. Find a skating rink and go ice skating. Not only will you be moving, but did you know that the cold might also help to rev up your metabolism? 2. Go tobogganing. The climbing-up-the-hill part will get your heart pumping. Plus, same benefits as above and, bonus, you’ll feel like a kid again. All weather dates: 3. Get a couple’s massage. A great de-stresser to the power two. 4. Take a dance class. Learn some new moves and have fun while you cover a couple of miles without even thinking about it. 5. Hunt the flea markets and thrift shops. Shopping for treasures, the needle in the haystack can be lots of fun and will – literally and not – keep you on your toes. 6. Go for a laugh. A date at a comedy club is an oldie but a goodie. Laughing is good for the soul and for your health! 7. Go for a hike and take a – gourmet – picnic as your destination reward. And by “gourmet”, we mean healthy + real food + tasty. 8. Visit the museum. We all intend to go to the museum much more often than we actually do go, don’t we? Make it a date and then you’ll go for sure. And wear your pedometer because you know that you’ll get some good walking done there. 9. Go bowling. We heard that bowling is “in” again. And it’s a fun double date too. 10. Dinner and dancing. They’re a little hard to find these days, but some restaurants, especially Latin ones, offer a dance floor in their lounge area and turn up the danceable music in later hours. Yelp might help you find a dining & dancing establishment in your area. Worth the search! Warmer weather date ideas: 11. Walking tours. Play tourist and discover new stories about your city. 12. Attend the local festival. Food festivals (make healthy choices!), music festivals (especially if there is dancing!), art festivals… Walk around the festival area and the neighborhood while you enjoy the local artistry, in whatever category that may be… 13. Shop the farmer’s market and plan a healthy culinary feast with some of the unusual ingredients you will have picked up. Squash blossoms maybe? 14. Throw a frisbee or go fly a kite. At a beach or at a park, these are two fun ideas for a weekend afternoon date. 15. Play golf, tennis or go cycling. A little competition, a little heart pumping, a little sweating… Sports are a perfect excuse for dates. Or vice versa! Which idea are you picking for your next date?
