5 Things Not to Do in NYC on Super Bowl Weekend

super bowl boulevard new york cityBeing a tourist in NYC is always an adventure: whether you’re trying to navigate public transportation, understand the local lingo, or figure out where you can get the best meal for the least money. This week it’s even crazier because Sunday the Super Bowl is here (well technically it’s in New Jersey, but that’s a whole different conversation.)
Here are my top 5 things not to do in NYC on Super Bowl Weekend:
1. Don’t Go to Times Square
Yes, I know its where the action is. Times Square has been transformed intoSuper Bowl Boulevard. Broadway is shut down and  attractions, such as:
  • Vince Lombardi Super Bowl Trophy
  • 60 foot tall Tobaggan Run
  • NFL Rush Zone
  • Super Bowl Theatre
Its also overrun with tourists, vendors, and fans; and is even more crowded than normal. If you must go, watch your wallet, your phone and your camera: and if the deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Cars, taxis, and buses are trying to figure out how to stay out of the way: traffic is barely moving and honking loudly.
2.  No Jaywalking
With the traffic tie-ups in and near Times Square and drivers looking for alternate routes, don’t jaywalk. No one is paying attention to what they’re doing, drivers are looking for options and blowing through red lights. Don’t assume they’ll see you: they probably won’t.
3.  Don’t Stand in the Bike Lane
Restaurant deliverers, couriers, locals trying to avoid public transportation and tourists sightseeing are all sharing NYC’s bike lanes. Don’t make the mistake of standing in the bike lane while waiting to cross the street: they’ll knock you over.
4. Don’t Buy Tickets on the Street
The news is full of stories about the dropping price of Super Bowl tickets. It sounds like there are good deals out there if you haven’t bought your tickets yet. But don’t buy tickets from a guy on the corner: nothing would  be worse than to get to the stadium Sunday and discover your $500 ticket deal is worth $.05. Buy tickets only from reputable sources.
5. Don’t Miss Out On the Super Bowl Fun
I’m not a fan: but its an event. So even if you’re not a fan, check out some of the Super Bowl events all over the city, but a souvenir t-shirt, or at least get some free samples they’re handing out: I’ve had Lancaster Caramels and Oikos Greek Yogurt today.
See you on Super Bowl Boulevard!
