January, 2014

January.
Prancing into a New Year…welcome!
It’s the Year of the Horse in 2014…think about that image of horses racing free, manes flying, enjoying the gallop…sounds like a forward momentum year to me!
January is named for Janus, a face looking back & the other looking forward. Good to take the highlights of 2013 into the 2014 adventure that is still to unfold.
Yes, it’s a new page, but as Herman Hesse reminded us in his brilliant Steppenwolf, we don’t get to change completely…we have baggage…our freedom is in taking the chess pieces of our personal lives, tipping the board upside down, & rearranging those same pieces in a new pattern. A change is as good as a rest?
January encourages us to try again to do the things we know we need to do: walk, eat nutritionally, get enough sleep…to keep humour and an attitude of gratitude in our encounters…to look for small gifts in every day…to volunteer…to try one new thing. One step forward, two steps back, another segue forward…a dance with the universe.
January in our coastal spaces is washed with silver…cloud and sea and rain-drizzled forest…the beauty of Winter’s palette. Cool, the black & white photo, Summer’s reverse. Beauty lives in all things, all seasons. We just have to be looking….
Is that the message of January? Its spareness invites our attention? We are not dazzled by the lush crowding flowering of Spring-into-Summer?
January invites us to stare at that fresh page, to consider that first month and its promise of a beginning.
One question: what is it that you’ve always wanted to do? What steps are required to do it? Then begin.
January invites us to do. So…ready, set, go. (As usual, the kids had it right!).
Happy New Year.
