When you’re checking out rental information, your moving date may determine whether you pay more attention to your thinking or your feelings. A recent survey found that consumers tend to make more emotional decisions when they are faced with moving into a new home in the immediate future.
Researchers conducted an experiment where college students were asked to imagine a certain graduation date and given two choices for a new apartment. They could follow their feelings and opt for a smaller and prettier place with a scenic view or pick an objectively better apartment with more room and a more convenient location. Those who imagined they were graduating and moving within a month went with the prettier apartment. Those who imagined they would not be graduating and moving until a year from now chose the more practical address. The study was conducted by Hannah H. Chang of Singapore Management University and Michel Tuan Pham of Columbia University. Chang and Pham speculate that, “Feelings are relied upon more when the outcome is closer in time because these feelings appear to be more informative in such situations.”
Of course, hunting for a new apartment home is a personal and complex process so you have to weigh all the factors that will contribute to your satisfaction. Still, once you know your likely bias you can adjust for it and figure out which choice is really right for you. Attractive surroundings will enhance your enjoyment, but a long commute usually makes people unhappy. In fact, one study found that traveling more than 45 minutes to work each day increases your risk of divorce by 40%.
Do your research and shop around before you decide on any new home. A thorough search will help you find an apartment that appeals to both your heart and your head no matter how soon you’re moving.
