When I applied to colleges, I knew that I wanted to go down south. I had lived in Maryland my entire life and wanted to try something new. After looking at various schools, Columbia and the University of South Carolina fit my criteria the best.
I have found Columbia to be such a difference experience from living in the suburbs in Maryland and have had great experiences getting to know more about the city. One of my favorite things about Columbia is that even though it is the capital of South Carolina, it still feels like a quaint college town.
The food is one aspect that I love about Columbia. Where I grew up, the majority of restaurants were large chains. All of the privately owned and small chain restaurants in Columbia always make going out to eat a great time. Gourmet Shop and Café Strudel have become two of my favorite places to eat. Cool Beans is always great to study and spend time at during the school day.

I’m always looking to stay occupied on the weekends and when I’m out of class, and it can be easy to only be aware of events put on by USC. There are always other activities taking place, and all of the events posted on free-times.com helps me stay informed on upcoming occasions. Last year, I volunteered in the Color Run, which I found out about through the Free Times.
Every year Free Times puts on a poll about the best things Columbia has to offer. The poll covers everything from music to art and shopping. This is helpful when looking to find a place to eat, but not knowing the options in town. The poll lists the winner and runner-up, giving two highly rated options to choose from.
The Saluda River in Columbia allows for tons of outdoor activities. There’s a scenic walking or running trail, and warm weather allows for tubing and kayaking. The Congaree National Park, right outside Columbia, is great for hiking, camping and canoeing.
In the two years I’ve spent living in Columbia, I have had so many great experiences learning about what the city has to offer. I’ve spent time outdoors hiking, tried new restaurants, and volunteered in community events. Columbia has given me so much to love in the past two years, I can’t wait to see what the next two will bring.
