Donal Skehan is a very busy man. The self-taught cook and food blogger has starred in the Irish TV series Kitchen Hero: Bringing Cooking Back Home (2011), Kitchen Hero: Great Food for Less (2012), and Kitchen Hero: Home Cooked (2013); written four cookbooks, including the recent Kitchen Hero: Home Cooked; co-hosted the BBC's Junior MasterChef (2012); and launched the quarterly magazine FEAST, a celebration of Ireland's artisanal food producers featuring recipes and Skehan's own gorgeous photography. Did we mention that he used to be in a boy band? And that he's only 27 years old?
We thought the rising star would be an excellent person to speak with about the places that make today's Dublin--Skehan's beloved hometown--such an exciting place for a food lover. "Dublin has a great relaxed vibe and is a wonderful place to explore," says Skehan. "I love the access we have to locally produced and great quality ingredients, seen in the exciting menus of Dublin's bustling food scene. For many years we looked to other countries and continents for inspiring ingredients, but there has been a shift and change for the better. It's incredibly inspiring to have so many people passionate and excited about the food scene here in Dublin and in Ireland right now."
Here, 11 things Donal Skehan loves about Dublin, plus his tips on day-trip-worthy destinations.
