Good Design Tells A Story

Header Seshn PostsDESIGNis
Design isn’t simply how an object looks, but the story behind something. A story has a beginning, middle and end. Our story begins with who this thing is for, why and how it is created, what it is, and where and when it will be used. The design of an object begins with answering who. Who will be using the thing that is to be designed. Decisions will be made with the end user in mind and help guide the designer to a better solution. After the who is apparent, the next question is why. Why should this thing exist, and why should I pursue this idea? Answers to why, will validate or disqualify the initial idea. Next, the design process asks how. How will this solve a problem or a need, how will it be created, how is the best way to go about taking this idea and turning it into something? Answers to how will examine the value of the solution and the actions required to realize the idea. Once the process of elimination has narrowed the field of solutions, it’s wise to ask what. What can I do to optimize this solution, what will be the method of manufacture and implementation. Last but not least, a paramount question-What can be done to enhance the way this thing is experienced? By answering what, the solution should be very well-developed, considered and refined, making it a valid design to a true need.
I believe that design is not a style, or appearance, but a process and a story. By understanding the design of an object, its value can be fully appreciated by anyone. Good design is well-researched, refined and refined again, then optimized to be the best version of itself. Good design tells a story about how an idea becomes an object of value.
