Folks, Alanna and I went old school today. Yes, we sent letters to potential customers in our area. Don’t get me wrong — online marketing works for us — we’ve gotten clients through social media, organic search, paid search, etc. However, I think there is an untapped market of small business owners who either don’t have the time or resources to really move their own online marketing forward. My assumption is that they are probably busy — some aren’t super active online, so I am coming to them where I know I can probably at least get in the door — a good, old fashioned letter.
And, this is really kind of old fashioned — I took the time to personalize and sign my nice letter and offer, I put in a small rack card-sized infographic on the impact of social media and local SEO for small business, and I affixed a stamp. No metered mail here. This was a labor of love — love of the great small businesses I’ve encountered that I think would be neat to work with. It’s not a mass mailing — it’s just a reach out to some places I’d like to shop and would like to see succeed.
I’ll let you know how my little experiment goes. Do you ever trot out the old ways to reach your customers? How has it worked for you? I know in the days of over-stuffed email inboxes and social media streams, it can be delightful to receive a letter that doesn’t look like junk mail.
