H&M’s Preppy Push & The Latest on That Gwyneth/Graydon Spat

Hello-hello, what a wild week it has been already.  The Olympics have been amazing to watch, but we’ll save most of that for our Friday Fun. (Where else can we talk about the pants being worn by the curling teams?!)
At any rate, we have some brief tidbits to share today, beginning with what I’m calling H&M’s preppy push.

The Swedish retailing giant (whose full name is Hennes & Mauritz) is going after male customers interested in a ‘preppy’ look. Model Wouter Peelen is the face of the promotional campaign for the brand’s spring line.

From well-cut blazers, to striped numbers and classic twill pants, H&M’s preppy inspired designs for the spring season play with basic colors, illuminated by bright tones and graphic patterns, like stripes or micro checks.

Items are available online and I believe in stores as well. We show the Fine Knit Sweater in a silk/cotton blend ($39.95), and the Waxed Cotton Jacket, not quite a Barbour, but not ghastly ($99).

This is not a specific collection, it appears to be more of a marketing plan, and a wise one at that. Two more styles.

(Is it me, or does Mr. Peelen have some serious veins in his forehead…?)
Pursuing preps, or at least advertising styles that would hypothetically appeal to those with a prep aesthetic, is certainly not anything new for H&M.  Below, a look from the spring 2011 ‘Romantic and Preppy’ campaign featuring Jourdan Dunn.

These menswear ensembles are from spring 2012, featuring a decidedly nautical inclination. (Which is all anyone is doing this spring, or so it seems. More on that next week.)

Today’s other item is an update on our October post regarding an escalating disagreement between über-prep Gwyneth Paltrow and Vanity Fair.  More specifically, the magazine’s editor, Graydon Carter.  Background via the magazine’s website:
In his Editor’s Letter from the March Hollywood Issue, Graydon Carter addresses long-running rumors that Vanity Fair has been working on an “epic takedown” of Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow.
This portion is directly from Mr. Carter’s Editor’s Letter in the March magazine:
In October, Gwyneth called me. We talked for about 20 minutes about the story and her reaction, or over-reaction, to it. At one point, she asked my advice as to what to do to get the “haters” on her side. I suggested putting on 15 pounds. I joked that it works for me. She replied I had put on much more than that. Which I thought was fair and funny.
One quote from Mr. Carter referred to Ms. Paltrow’s hypothetical mandate to friends that they ‘never talk to Vanity Fair again,’ saying “Kim Jong-un couldn’t have issued a more blanket demand.” Comparing someone to the North Korean dictator isn’t likely to win points from the person under discussion. But that actually is the point: Mr. Carter is very savvy. That kind of comment wouldn’t make it to print were its effects not contemplated at length by the editor.
Racked.com sums up where things stand now:
….a point that Carter doesn’t explicitly state but says nonetheless—that for whatever reason, he has decided to kill that story “for the time being.” So unless someone leaks it to the media, we’ll never get to read it. What a disappointment.
Hmmmm. Methinks we’ll hear more on this one.

We leave you with this.

That is a NOAA map showing the active watches, warnings across the country late this afternoon.  The winter-from-you-know-where marches on, making lives miserable in many parts of the country. We hope everyone can stay safe and warm.
