When Hotmail was launched in 1996, for millions of people, it was their first free email account and their first chance to explore the world of online shopping, through having an email address to confirm orders.
The initial thrill of signing up for online newsletters has worn off for many people and today, Hotmail – now rebranded as Outlook – is widely regarded as the address you use when you fill out surveys, competitions, or other non-important communication, when you want to protect your other free email accounts, such as Gmail, or your work email address from spam and endless promotional offers.
Unfortunately for those who do not use Gmail, Hotmail, once notorious for allowing all sorts of unpleasant spam to enter your inbox, is now so strict that it deems messages from legitimate companies to be spam as well.
I noticed today in one of the club membership programs I belong to that one of their e-gift certificate providers – the movie chain Hoyts – was having enormous problems with many Hotmail members unable to receive their electronic vouchers, with most going straight to spam, or never getting through at all. As a result, Hoyts was getting a nasty backlash through no fault of its own.
If you’re planning on sending an e-gift certificate to a loved one for Valentine’s Day, their birthday or any other special occasion, make sure you’re not sending it to a Hotmail address or ask them to give you a different email account, or it might not arrive.
