In the last couple of years, Hilton Head has been making great strides to revitalize and rejuvenate some of the Island’s older commercial districts by redeveloping many of these areas. The most recent and notable project is the Shelter Cove Towne Centre. December marked the Grand Opening of the new and nearly 100,000 square foot Kroger which includes a drive-thru Pharmacy, Starbucks Coffee, and many specialty items. From my experience, the new Kroger shopping offers nearly everything you could ever imagine while shopping for your groceries. I find myself spending more time than what's necessary roaming aimlessly up and down the aisles absorbing just how magnificent this place is.
Throughout this redevelopment process, the Belk's stores, men's and women's, have remained open and Jos. A. Banks has already relocated to one of the newly constructed retail buildings. According to the Island Packet, several other retailers have committed to space in the Centre including an 8th Hilton Head establishment by the SERG Restaurant Group. The SERG Group will be occupying a two-story prime location featuring an outdoor dining and rooftop bar showcasing sunset views over Broad Creek. The Shelter Cove Towne Centre project will also include 210 upscale waterfront apartments when it is complete.
While the new Towne Centre is certainly more noticeable, it isn’t the only project in the works. The Town of Hilton Headalso has plans underway for a Bridge to the Beach connecting Shelter Cove and its Town Centre to Chaplin Park. Other plans include revitalizing Pineland Station, Northridge Plaza and the Coligny Plaza area. To allow these projects to commence the Town of Hilton Head's Planning Commission has been working diligently towards changes aimed to simplify the island's zoning regulations that will allow business owners the opportunity to improve their properties and for businesses to expand.
How do all of these projects benefit Hilton Head Island? Due to aging and climate conditions, many of Hilton Head Island's commercial structures have become weathered and antiquated. By revising the zoning laws, these structures and the areas they're located can be rejuvenated creating vibrate and electrifying tourist districts that are more representative and what's expected of our island. Along with the redeveloped commercial centers, the Town of Hilton Head continues to construct miles of additional bike pathways on the island. This incredible leisure trail system offers safe and scenic routes for everyone, especially tourists, to travel to all areas of the island in a more relaxed and efficient manner.
There have also been recent discussions between town officials and the University of South Carolina about adding a campus on the south end of Hilton Head specifically for the University's hospitality and management program. One of the benefits of the proposed campus would be invigorating the area’s housing units with students. The campus would serve about 200 scholars and allow them to live and work in the industry while earning their degrees.
Overall, it's obvious the Town of Hilton Head continues to seek out ways to maintain our world class attributes and improve our island’s uniqueness. This type of commitment is expected from the more than 39,000 full-time residents who've invested in our community and the 2.5 million annual visitors who are considering an investment. "Hilton Head Island - Simply a better way to live."
