While the federal government is doing its best to limit the free market on a national level, here on Hilton Head Island the free market is alive and well. All one has to do is look at the current ‘grocery store wars’ going on right now and you will get a clear illustration of what I am talking about.
It all started a few years ago when Fresh Market emerged on the scene in the Shoppes on the Parkway Plaza. Fresh Market raised the bar on what the grocery shopping experience was and residents and visitors alike responded by spending their time and money in the store. Not to be outdone, the Harris Teeter at Park Plaza finished a major overhaul and renovation and created the only Harris Teeter superstore in the area. The proverbial line in the sand had been drawn and competition was alive and well on Hilton Head Island. Now we have the Kroger Superstore, which recently opened on December 11, 2013 and is the talk of the town. When entering Kroger you are immediately overwhelmed by the size and magnitude and amazed at how a grocery store can be so large. The talk and buzz around town is so great that when you make the trip to Super Kroger it feels like you are going to an amusement park and all that is missing is the roller coaster.
But wait, there’s more…
Whole Foods will also be opening a store in the Shelter Cover area. Whole Foods will occupy the space once used by Piggly Wiggly and will add a fourth major player to the mix. Each of these stores/companies offers a wide array of goods and services; plethora of produce (both domestic and foreign), organic foods, hot meals served daily, and a wine selection that would make the King of France proud. The biggest benefactor(s) are the residents and visitors to Hilton Head Island and the surrounding areas. The Free Market and competition is/was the driving force behind the ‘grocery store wars’ and as a result we all get to choose from an unbelievable selection. If Super Kroger doesn’t have the wine you are looking for in their 1700+ collection, you are sure to find it at one of the others. While each offers a different experience for the consumer, they are all making life better for us. Where else can you find four mega grocery stores within 5 miles of one another? All the more reason to live on and visit Hilton Head Island.
